Youth in Garissa County have joined hands to create awareness on climate change through sporting events that has been going on over the last two months culminating in a final football match held on Sunday afternoon at Garissa primary school grounds.
In the colorful finals that pitted Gargar FC against Sunna FC, the former emerged winners of the climate change awareness tournament.
IFBro took home the third position while Berlin FC emerged the most disciplined team of the tournament.
The climate change awareness tournament was organized by Young Kenyan Environment Envoy and Founder of the ‘Youth for Environmental Sustainability Network’, Abdikadir Aden.
The sporting event brought together, talented and vibrant youth from 20 teams in Garissa County and was co-sponsored by the Football Kenya Federation, Adeso Africa, Orange, Takaful Insurance of Africa and Womankind Kenya among others.
Addressing participants and the general public, the organizer, Mr. Abdikadir challenged corporate institutions, organizations and the business community to come out in large numbers and at least support a team for over a certain period of time.
“The future is promising when we have young people who understand and can address both existing and emerging environmental concerns, a lot will be achieved towards sustainable development”, said Amb. Abdikadir.
The event was also graced by Members of County Assembly for Iftin and Dadaab wards.
“Our boys have shown dedication and professional skills in football and we hope to see most of them playing for the national team and even international football”, said Abdullahi, the team manager for IFBRP Football club.
Locals turned out in large numbers to cheer their favorite teams.
