Suspected al-shabaab militants hijack miraa vehicle, kidnap chief along Arabia – Mandera route

Suspected Al-shabaab militants this morning hijacked a vehicle transporting miraa to Mandera County and kidnapped the Chief of Arabia town.

Chief Mukhtar Maalim Adan popularly known as ‘Otieno’ was kidnapped after the armed men reportedly waylaid a public service vehicle he was traveling in along the Arabia – Mandera road in an area that has now become the scene of many brutal attacks.

The gunmen separated passengers using their national ID cards before singling out the Chief.

It was along this route that the convoy of Mandera governor was attacked as well as the incident in which more than 60 Kenyans lost their lives in a deadly attack on a bus that was heading to Nairobi from Mandera town.

The latest incident comes barely a day after the Kenyan defense forces announced arresting 8 members of the militia at Omar Jillao and confiscated their arms.

Security officials were said to be pursuing the attackers but no recoveries were made at the time of going to press.

Leaders from the North Eastern region who embarked on a fact finding mission through out the region after the Garissa University attack called for the empowerment of Chiefs so that they could help in fighting terror and intelligence gathering.

The Chiefs also asked to be armed with some reporting threats to their lives.
