Mandera Governor Ali Roba has today flagged off relief food for distribution in areas worst hit by the biting droughts currently witnessed in the county.

Roba said that this was the third drought season that his administration is responding to as a result of three successive failures of rain.

He added that the World Food Programme (WFP) has not distributed any food in the recent past while the National government’s donation of 500 bags per sub-county is insufficient.

“I would like to take this opportunity to appeal to the National Government to compliment the effort of the County Government in distributing relief food and providing veterinary support to the pastoral community” he said.

The head of Mandera County who is also the chairman of governors of the Arid and Semi-arid counties said that he would like to put the country on an alert because currently 24 counties are suffering the same fate as that of his own.

He assured area residents that there was no cause for alarm as his government will respond in time and put in place a mitigation program that will prevent drought situations from turning to an emergency.
