African Union mission AMISOM is seeking to increase their numbers to take the war to Al Shabaab militants.

Somali security forces have arrested nine gunmen in a security operation they launched to smoke out Alshabaab militants and sympathisers in the town of Qoryoley in lower Shabelle region.

Locals told the media nine armed gunmen were arrested in the swift operation by police following a off tip from the public.

The town’s police commissioner Ali Mohamed told news agencies that they believe those arrested were members of Al shabaab.

He said they recovered nine AK 47 rifles and in another separate operation they managed to destroy two vehicles owned by Alshabaab after engaging in a gun battle with the militants.

“We are planning to extend our operation across lower Shabelle region to get rid of the militants” said Ali.

The militants who have been waging war with the Somali government for close to a decade did not immediately comment on the matter.
